1 in 8. That number is scary to me. Actually, that number is alarming to me. And that number is a reality to me. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, according to The American Cancer Society. My high school boyfriend’s mom was the first person I knew to be diagnosed with breast cancer, 2 types of breast cancer at one time. Shortly after I graduated from college, I got the call from my mom telling me that she had been diagnosed. A few years ago, my sister in law was diagnosed- and there have been dozens of other women, friends, co-workers, and clients who I have since learned have been diagnosed with this disease.

Aside from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. Breast cancer is the number one cause of cancer death in Hispanic women. It is the second most common cause of cancer death in white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women. (Centers For Disease Control and Prevention)

I am happy to report that my mom, sister in law, and all of the women in my life who have been diagnosed with breast cancer are doing fabulous, thanks to advances in medical research and the support of such organizations like the American Cancer Society and Susan G Komen, For the Cure.

To celebrate breast cancer awareness month and breast cancer survivors, during October Andi Diamond Photography is offering complimentary studio mini sessions and a $250 print credit to women who are currently going through breast cancer treatment and their families. If you are a women currently battling breast cancer, and want to celebrate your strength and beauty, please call the studio today at 813-503-5056 to schedule your session as our gift. We want to celebrate you. If you know of a women currently undergoing breast cancer treatment and you think custom family portraits might help her smile, please pass this along to her.

Tampa family photographer, Andi Diamond, spends time taking family portraits at Tampa's Children Cancer Center.

Recently I had the amazing opportunity to photograph Tampa families at the Children’s Cancer Center during their sickle cell disease family support night. This was truly such an honor to me, as many of the families had never had a family portrait created. Check out some of the beautiful families I was blessed to photograph:

Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects nearly 100,000 people in the United States. It is most common in Africans and African-Americans. Sickle cell disease causes red blood cells to form into a crescent shape, like a sickle. The sickle-shaped red blood cells break apart easily, causing anemia. Sickle red blood cells live only 10-20 days instead of the normal 120 days. The damaged sickle red blood cells also clump together and stick to the walls of blood vessels, blocking blood flow. This can cause severe pain and permanent damage to the brain, heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, bones, and spleen. About 2,000 babies are born with sickle cell disease each year in the United States. To learn more about sickle cell disease or to support the Children’s Cancer Center, click here.

Tampa photographer, Andi Diamond, gives back to her community by serving as the camp photographer for the Circle of Friends reunion on St. Pete Beach. Circle of Friends takes children with cancer and blood disorders from all around the US on a trip each year.

It is that time of year again- the reunion trip for the Circle of Friends and I cannot wait! Every year we take children with cancer and blood disorders from all around the United States to Wausau, WI for a fun filled winter trip. And every other year we have a reunion trip with the kids from the previous 2 winter trips. This year it will be on St. Petersburg Beach. Pete and I are honored to be a part of this amazing organization for the past 10 years (I am especially proud of Pete who helped to organized the entire trip this summer)! The kids are beyond amazing and the experience for the adults may be even more rewarding than for the kids. Check out my diary for frequent updates as I am also the camp’s photographer. If you would like to support the Foundation, please contact us at 813-601-3825 or peterb@samter.com. You can follow us on Facebook, too.

The studio will be closed Wednesday through Sunday. Feel free to shoot me an email and I will try my best to be in touch prior to next week.

Monte Colburn (from The Deadliest Catch), Skip Holtz, Austin King, Fred McGriff, Ryan Nece, Dexter Jackson, and David Wells to name a few. Pete got to play with Mark Royals and Yo Murphy (and he claims he gave them a run for their money…ha!)

(All proceeds to benefit the Mike Alstott Family Foundation.) Thrilled to be a part of the event, Mike, Nicole, and Rich. Thank you for giving so much back to Tampa Bay!

Tampa photographer, Andi Diamond, gives back by supporting the Circle of Friends, part of the Wunsch Family Foundation. Andi serves as the trip photographer every year.

Pete and I have been very blessed to be a part of the Circle of Friends for the past 10 years. When our friend Jerry Wunsch was the offensive tackle for the Bucs, he started the Wunsch Family Foundation. His goal was to provide children with cancer with emotional, motivational, and memorable experiences. Each year we take children with cancer from around the country to Jerry’s hometown of Wassau, WI for an amazing winter trip. Several other NFL players join us as well, bringing children from their hometowns. It is hard to describe in words the magical experiences that the children (and counselors) have while on the trip. As not only a counselor, but as the trip photographer, I will be tasked with trying to capture the fun, emotion, and joy that we experience. We leave tomorrow and return Sunday (so the studio will be closed). I will be posting images on my blog throughout the trip, so check back often to experience some of the magic! To read a recent article on the Circle of Friends, click here.

Tampa photographer, Andi Diamond, is on site at the "Locks of Love Day" in Hyde Park taking pictures of all the transformations. See the images on her photography blog here.

What an amazing day Saturday was in Hyde Park Village! Level 2 Salon hosted Locks of Love and Andi Diamond Photography was there to capture the joy, tears, and excitement! Over 40 ponytails were collected for Locks of Lock, to help them in their quest to provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada suffering from long-term medical hair loss (usually from cancer). So many stories to tell…but I will let the images speak for themselves. I have to start by giving a huge pat on the back to all of the staff of Level 2 and volunteers from the Krewe of South Shore Marauders for their help and commitment! So many incredible, beautiful transformations! Check out the befores (and durings..) and afters!I am so thrilled that I got to be a part of this amazing experience. Tami and Martha at Level 2 Salon- you ROCK! Sylvia with the Krewe- great job with such a successful event! Thanks for allowing me to capture these very special moments.
