Wedding Whys and Why Knots by Tampa Wedding Photographer, Andi Diamond

Hiring Your Wedding DJ, Communication is Key!

Band or DJ?  A common question amongst many brides and grooms when planning their wedding reception.  Should you decide that a DJ is for the route you prefer, here are some helpful things to consider.  As more disc jockeys are including emcee services, they are playing an even  larger role in the big day.  This is why communication is critical. The couple and the DJ need to be able to stay in touch  before and during the entire planing process.

It is not unusual for a young couple to be uncertain about the order of events at weddings- introductions, first dance, cake cutting, dinner, garter and bouquet and any other family traditions they want to include. Brides and grooms often have different ideas about how and when things will happen, without ever having discussed it.  Professional DJ’s try their best to support you, and offer their experience, but allow you to make your own decisions. Communication!

Often couples have no idea what songs will be good for what tradition. They look to their DJ for professional guidance , offering expertise without forcing their idea of the perfect song. After all, it is your wedding! More communication.

It used to be that the bride’s mother did the bulk of the wedding planning. That is not always the case today. Young couples often have to figure all this out on their own and don’t always have experience with hiring professionals or organizing a big event. It is an honor when the wedding vendors can help and support you in the process of planning fun and memorable wedding entertainment.

I encourage anyone planning their wedding to involve the DJ in the organization of the music and the sequence of events. Professional disc jockeys don’t have an emotional stake in the wedding, as do family and friends, so they can offer you perspective without underlying motives that are not in your best interest. Hire an experienced DJ and he/she will be your trusted ally as you move closer to the big day.  And remember, most people are busy having fun at a wedding, only remembering the flubs. The rest ‘just happens’. The goal for the professionals orchestrating your wedding is only for you to remember that you had the time of your life!

At Andi Diamond Photography, we have had the opportunity to photograph weddings along side several amazing DJ’s.  A couple of our faves are:

Jonathan Cortez with JAC of All Trades, 813-476-3134.  Not only does Jonathan DJ, but he is a premier vocalist and performer.

Josh Walther at Inspire Entertainment, 813-728-4189.  Inspire provides experienced DJs, talented musicians, and creative lighting elements (I LOVE uplighting!)

Allen Arellano at Classic Entertainment, 813.891.1440.  Several professional and interactive disc jockeys available that will make your wedding reception memorable!

I love working with experienced DJ’s like these guys not only because they make the flow of the wedding so smooth, but because great communication between your wedding photographer and your wedding DJ helps the schedule of events go that much easier with great transitions.  Makes sure to tell these wedding DJ’s that Andi Diamond Photography sent you.  I know they help will make your wedding fantastic!  And since every diary entry is more fun with an image, here is one from Sophia and Ray’s recent wedding in Miami.

“Wedding Whys and Why Knots” by Tampa Wedding Photographer, Andi Diamond

Wedding Flowers 101:  At Andi Diamond Photography, we know that wedding planning, as exciting as it may be,  can also be daunting and sometimes overwhelming.  So we are excited to introduce to you our new series of blog posts, Wedding Whys and Why Knots…. with wedding planning tips on everything from wedding photography (of course), wedding flowers, wedding dresses, wedding venues, etc…basically anything and everything that has to do with planning a wedding in Tampa Bay (or around the United States).

Wedding Flowers 101 – Who, What, When, Where and Why

Why flowers?

Flowers are as common in a wedding as a white dress.  For centuries, flowers have been used in bridal bouquets, as centerpieces on the tables and to decorate churches and reception halls.  The beauty in their colors, shapes and textures as well as their fragrance and what certain flowers represent make them the perfect accompaniment to every style of wedding.  Whether you consider yourself an authority on flowers, an admirer or completely clueless, you can pull off a fabulous floral design for your wedding.

What type of flowers?

Most people don’t have favorite flowers, in fact until they start to plan a wedding, most brides and grooms have never had to think about what flowers say about their style or what they might be communicating through their choices for decorative flowers.  If you’re not an expert or even someone who can name more than 3 types of flowers, you are not alone.  Lucky for you, there are plenty of experts out there.  Any experienced florist can help you pick out the ideal combination of blooms for your wedding based on some general information about your ceremony and reception.  One of our favorite florist recommendations is Events in Bloom, Jana Stall.

Some preliminary decisions to make:

  • Color – this is the difficult part for some.  Even if you have a color scheme chosen for your wedding, sometimes it’s tough to narrow down how you want to accent that theme.  Think about whether you want the flowers to draw attention and be a focal point or if you want them to blend with the overall style and not take attention away from other elements in the décor.
  • Shape – for centerpieces, consider the height; a low floral centerpiece or a tall one will allow guests to see one another across the table.  For bouquets popular shapes include round, cascade and hand-tied.  Round bouquets and nosegays are common and more formal.  Cascading bouquets are romantic and dramatic while hand-tied bouquets have a natural, simple look.
  • Quantity – try to figure out how many of each type of arrangement you’ll need.  How many centerpieces, bridesmaids’ bouquets, pew flowers, standing arrangements, hanging arrangements, boutonnieres and corsages.
  • Budget – your florist will need to know what he or she has to work with.  Once you have a budget established, you’ll be able to determine how lavish your arrangements can be or where you might need to cut corners

Who should do your flowers?

Once you’ve made some basic decisions about what type of flowers you’ll need, how many different kinds of arrangements and how much you want to spend, you’re ready to meet with a few florists.  If you have some references from friends, that’s a great start.  If you’re starting from scratch and doing a search online, you might want to make some phone calls before setting up any face-to-face interviews.  It’s always a good idea to meet with at least a few florists.  They may all be seasoned professionals but each might come with a different skill set so you’ll want to choose the florist who most fits your needs.

When interviewing florists, you’ll want to ask them questions that cover their background and experience, their artistic vision and their operations.  Here are just a few sample interview questions:

  • How many years have you been a wedding florist?
  • How many weddings do you do a year?
  • Do you consider your style to be traditional or modern?
  • Do you have any ideas for how I might stretch my budget?
  • How many people will you have working on my wedding?

It’s always a good idea to view a florist’s portfolio.  And if they have references, that’s even better.  If you have the opportunity to speak with past clients, you can ask them questions like whether or not their florist was punctual and a good problem solver and whether or not they would recommend their florist to others.

When and Where?

Your florist should be able to give you a good rundown of which flowers are in season around your wedding date.  They should also be able to tell you where the flowers come from as well as the accessibility of flowers that are out of season.  Many blooms are imported depending on where you live, so even if something is not available locally, you might be able to get them imported, albeit for a higher price.

We hope you found our first “Wedding Why and Why Knots” diary entry to be helpful.  If so, please leave us some blog love….it makes our day.  And since every post is better with pictures, here are some of our favorite wedding flowers from recent weddings:

New Wedding Photography Review on WeddingWire

Thank you Camie and William for posting this awesome review of your wedding photography experience with Andi Diamond Photography on WeddingWire.  I LOVED capturing your St. Petersburg Beach wedding photography (and your Tampa engagement session and St. Petersburg Beach trash-the-dress session).  I know it can be super stressful to hire a destination wedding photographer when you live in another state, and I am so glad and honored you chose Andi Diamond Photography!Andi was great, friendly, professional, and a pleasure to have at our wedding. She made us feel comfortable from the start and captured absolutely amazing photos of our event (practically a miracle with how goofy my husband and I are). From our first contacts with Andi she was personable and made a point to build a relationship with us as a couple and that showed right through our wedding day.

If I could relive my wedding a hundred times over, I would choose Andi each and every time.

Thank you so much, Camie and Bubba!  xo
